Chris Neilson dies to find himself in a heaven more amazing than he could have ever dreamed of. There is one thing
missing: his wife. After he dies, his wife, Annie killed herself and went to hell. Chris decides to risk eternity in
hades for the small chance that he will be able to bring her back to heaven.

Chris
Nielsen e sua moglie Annie sono legati da un amore illimitato. Hanno due figli che sono la loro gioia continua. Una
mattina, come tutte le mattine, i due bambini salgono con la baby-sitter sulla macchina che li conduce a scuola. Ma
stavolta non arrivano a destinazione: un incidente e i due ragazzi muoiono. Rimasti soli, Chris e Annie provano a
continuare a vivere. Ma niente è più come prima. Annie perde l'equilibrio mentale ed è ricoverata in manicomio,
poi faticosamente i due recuperano un certo equilibrio. Ma un giorno anche Chris muore, e trova ad attenderlo Albert, un
giovane di colore, che lo guida nell'aldilà e gli dice: "Tu non sei scomparso, sei solo morto". Chris è felice di
vedere che per lui il Cielo consiste nell'esistenza in uno dei magnifici dipinti di Annie. Gode della stupenda maestà
di questo Mondo dipinto, pieno dei romantici ricordi che aveva diviso con lei. E, mentre pensa questo, ne sente la
mancanza, vorrebbe averla ancora con sé. Viene a sapere che anche Annie è morta, ma si è suicidata e quindi per
loro non c'è speranza di tornare insieme. Annie è andata all'inferno.
Ma Chris non rinuncia, è deciso ad
andare verso l'inferno e porta con sé il Tracker, filosofo e saggio dai comportamenti ambigui.
